Shipping Industry gets ERP systems on board

In the advent of the International Safety Management Code, an increasing number of shipping companies are turning to Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems as a means to manage the new mandatory procedures and to avoid the heavy fines associated with non-compliance. ERPs are being used to manage all aspects of the business, from planned maintenance to crewing.

Shipping, one of the most ancient industries in the world, is a highly complex industry, with very specific requirements. The industry was naturally reluctant to introduce computerized information systems to what were already well-established work practices.
One of the major issues surrounding the use of any computerized information system within shipping has been usability. An ERP system that is not easy to use is in danger of being abandoned by vessel-based crewmembers officers and engineers - already well rehearsed in getting the job done. The system must be as intuitive as possible because crew turnover on board a vessel can be as quick as six months. This leaves little or no time for training.
The answer lies in creating a customized work environment to suit each individuals role within the business. Features and information within the ERP system can be presented on a need-to-know basis, simplifying the system for the user. Such a capability virtually eliminates the risk of information overload, thus encouraging the user to view the ERP as an enhancement to the way they work, rather than a threat.
Once the users are won-over and, with the right support, any business can be sure of getting the best possible value out of their chosen system.
